An early morning start for me today as I was wide awake at 5:00am so I decided it was time to get up and pack. This earlier start at least gave me an opportunity to see what was making the noise around camp last night which turned out to be two Wallabies.
Yesterday’s trip from Cubby Camp to Cut Out Camp was a trip of two halves. I headed off around 8:20am which was a very late start for me but I figured I only had 15km to cover so I didn’t want to rush. I spent most of the morning travelling through dense forest and given the warm weather, it was very pleasant and ‘real’ bushwalking. I was travelling at a pace that I haven’t done since I walked the Bibbulmun Track in 2018 and doing it easily. Then came the afternoon! After an early lunch I slowed down and took it easy before hitting a detour point.
This detour was caused by a tree fall which had destroyed an access footbridge which meant I had what turned out to be an additional 4km of walking; so much for a short day. I still got into camp at 2:15pm, just not as early as I’d hoped. The management road had recently be graded and it was physically hard walking as a result.
Cut Out Camp was very similar to Cubby’s Camp with the exception that it was a grass surface rather than bare earth. Same toilet, shelter, picnic table, and fire pit and the only difference was that the forest was denser.
After setting up and catching up with Gill by phone I finished my dinner and then headed to bed just after 6:00pm for what turned out to be 6.5 hours of sleep which is more than I usually get. The rest of the night I was just dozing.
Today I’m heading to Fitzroy Camp which is a 22.9km journey. Temperature wise I have 25 degrees forecast so it’s going to be a harder one so will be starting at around 7:30am to make the best of the cooler weather.
