Early morning over the harbour
It’s mid morning on Saturday 18 April and I have scheduled today as a rest day expecting after a long day spent on buses and trains, that I would be physically drained, which turned out to be the case. After a good sleep in I headed off to breakfast at Twelvefold Cafe in Henty Street which was one of the early opening options and had a spectacular breakfast. From there I sent some time looking around the central part of Portland and checking out the trailhead for tomorrow.
If you listened to podcast episode podcast episode 344, my expectations episode for this trip, I talked about having to navigate a crossing what was shown as a railway line on Google Maps. However, when I got here I discovered this was a tourist tram that only operates a few times a day and is very easy to walk across.
The other thing I was looking for was an outdoor store and found one not to far from the trailhead. This means that if you arrive in town and need some outdoor supplies then there is an option.
Portland is a lovely town with some fantastic old buildings that typically only exist when the town or city has had a prosperous past and they can afford to build in stone. I hadn’t been to Portland before but am already planning a return visit later in the year when we will be heading back this way.
I’ll head back out agin this afternoon to continue the tour before I assemble my pack in readiness for an early start in the morning – I’m hoping to be at the trailhead by 7:30am.
