Decision points

Last week one of our community members emailed me about their recent hike on the Hume and Hovell Track and their decision to pull the pin, turning a thru-hike into a section hike. The explanation that came with the email was well thought through and not a knee jerk reaction to a single event and for this I must applaud this hiker and their decision. The hike will still be completed, just in a different manner.

When doing any hike, in particular a long distance hike, it doesn’t really matter whether you are hiking alone, as a couple/pair, or in a group, a discussion needs to be had about when to pull the pin on a hike. Everyone is going to have different goals on a hike and for most people a ‘safe enjoyable hike’ is one of those. There is no single definition on what ‘safe and enjoyable’ is and however you define this, there is no wrong answer. The answer you come up with is the right answer.

Gill and I have discussed this and we have contingencies in place should they be required. Five days to go!
