It’s amazing how quickly a long distance hike creeps up on you. Most of the key organisation activity has already been done but I realised over the past few days that time was running short and I hadn’t started to arrange food. Given I’m starting my journey in two weeks, yesterday was a flurry of activity to purchase my food needs. Arranging freeze dried food deliveries, purchasing breakfasts and commercial snacks, and when my local markets open tomorrow picking up the bulk of my fruit and nut snacks. I won’t get around to bundling up my food until early next week but I just needed to make sure it was sitting there ready to go.

I also spent part of yesterday ordering ‘odds and sods’ including small zip lock bags for my my end of day protein hit, as well as making sure I had a back-up water purification method which caught me out on my recent Great South West Walk. Today I need to go to Australia Post to buy my resupply boxes with my first box due to be posted next Monday to make sure it gets to me on time for my first pick up.

Later on today I will assemble all my gear into one place, ready for packing in six days time and go through my gear list, again, to make sure that everything is there and doesn’t need replacing or mending.

Gill always loves (not) the lead-in process for my big walks as I take over the lounge room with gear and food for 52 days on-trail.

All of the above is very much ‘business as usual’ for a long distance hike but to make things more complex I’ve just changed over my iPhone and iPad mini and still need to set up background systems to help reduce my on-trail workload. I’m in for a very busy two weeks!
