Food prep for the Heysen
Yesterday evening was spent putting my food together for the first two sections for my upcoming trip on the Heysen Trail. I’ve, or I should say we’ve, done this enough times that this only took around an hour to knock off which involves a set of scales and lots of weighing.
Over the past few years I have managed to work out my eating patterns and I’m averaging 615 grams (dry weight) of food for each day. I’ve worked this out over the years – it’s pretty much impossible to consume the amount of calories I burn on a daily basis and when I’m in full-on long distance hiking mode. I average burning around 5,000+ calories, but on really big days I can burn up to 8,000+ calories. This trip is nowhere near that extreme but potentially I will lose around 20+ kg over the 7-8 week duration.
The first resupply box will go into the mail today and I still have the rest of the trip food to finalise this weekend but given that the next resupply box doesn’t need to be sent for another week there is time.
