The past five days has been a whirlwind both at work as I prepare to go on leave and when I get home as I finalise my preparations to head off to Tasmania. I sorted my gear last night and ensured that everything I needed was all there – this has been part of an ongoing process that has taken around a week.
Last weekend I finalised my gear selection but also waterproofed all my relevant pieces of gear. This is something I do prior to every long distance trip. My main worry a week ago was snowfall and that’s still a potential but this has now been overtaken by flooding in the northern part of Tasmania including the flooded river systems that I will need to cross. I have already decided to do the flood diversions given many of the rivers are now 2 metres deep and its not really the time of year for a swim. The bonus is that all the snow has been washed away, at least for the moment.
One drawback of the flooding is that the diversions can add extra distance and in my case I have an extra 10km to dal with on the trip to Sheffield. This has pushed me into deciding to do a longer day on my first day of walking and given I had only planned to do around 8km into Latrobe, I think I can manage that. I’ll see how I go.
The other good piece of news is that my first resupply box has arrived at the local post office only taking two days to get there which is pretty impressive. I have 11 days to pick it up which unless something goes horribly wrong, shouldn’t be an issue. Oh well time to head off to the airport for a flight to Hobart followed by a bus ride to Devonport.
