Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Long Sleeve Crew Neck Top Review

The Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Long Sleeve Crew Top was originally released in 2019 and more recently an updated version (colour change) has hit the market. Now you could be forgiven for thinking that this top is just another long sleeved top but its not until you look closer that you realise that this is a two layered garment. The inner layer that sits against your skin being 100% Pure Australian Merino and the outer layer is 100% Super Fine Schoeller Polypropylene which provides you with an overall garment weight of 300 gsm from bi-layer knit construction (hence the name).

What this means is that you get all the advantages of both materials and virtually none of the disadvantages. Originally when this top was released the outer layer was a dark blue colour and the inside layer was a green colour which helped to highlight the two separate layers. More recently the updated version is now solid black and you need to look closely to see the two layers. Ultimately this pairing of the two seperate layers delivers a garment with high moisture wicking, that dries fast when it gets wet, and that holds minimal odour.

Given the 300 gsm thickness this is definitely a cold weather top and sits in the high warmth category of tops provided by this Australian owned, Australian manufacturing company. The Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Long Sleeve Crew Top is suitable for the cooler conditions ranging from mid-late Autumn through to early-mid Spring.

Other features on this top are thumb holes at the wrist to provide additional warmth to the hands in colder temperatures and the flatlock stitching common to other Wilderness Wear garments. One thing worth mentioning is that because this is a cold weather garment, it isn’t light weight with my double XXL top weighing in at 354 grams which at one stage was heavier than my puffy jacket.

Size wise this is the first XXL top I have ever worn given I’m currently the heaviest (at 110 kg) I have ever been. Also as someone who has lifted weights for many years I have a fairly broad chest and neck but this top fits well, as per the company sizing, even with its slim fit. Given all of the above, its a firm fit which is how I like my tops. The top and sleeve length are both generous and unlike other brands, there is no corner cutting to save a few dollars. Speaking of price this top sells for AUD $150 RRP which given its features and warmth make it a very reasonable priced garment.

Like most hikers I use a layering system that provides a high degree of versatility over a wide range of temperatures and for me this includes a long sleeved lightweight top as well as a long sleeve heavier weight top. My current go to heavy weight top is the Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion 190 Switch Hoodie which I layer with a lighter weight top – either the Wilderness Wear Men’s Light Merino Long Sleeve Crew Neck Top or the Wilderness Wear Men’s Cumulo Merino Long Sleeved Tee Top depending on the time of the year.

Given that much of my working life has been spent outdoors in cold conditions, I do have a fairly high tolerance to cold weather and its rare I will ever wear my full four part layering system even in snow conditions. In the case of the Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Long Sleeve Crew Top I typically wear this on day hikes when I don’t have to deal with highly variable temperatures and usually I can get away with just this top and a rain jacket as a back up. It definitely is a firm favourite and one I have been wearing for the past seven years and one that is showing no signs of wear and tear. One last comment that to make is that the thumb loops which are designed to provide warmth to the meaty parts of the hand, isn’t a feature I typically use preferring instead to use lightweight glove liners if it gets that cold.

We like

  • High quality Australian Merino and polypropylene dual layered fabric
  • Supremely comfortable to wear against your skin
  • Double sewn flat seams prevent chafing and keep this garment comfortable no matter how heavy the pack or how many layers you wear
  • Excellent length in both the body of the garment as well as the sleeves which is great for those of us with a bit of extra height and reach
  • Australian owned, Australian made

We don't like

  • This top is for colder conditions only. It’s too hot for warmer conditions
  • Single colour choice only
