Macpac Merino Liner Gloves Review

Having worked outdoors for most of my life I have a high degree of tolerance to cold weather and as such I only wear gloves when its really, really cold. Even then I choose a fairly thin glove and this is were the Macpac Merino Liner Gloves come in handy.

I’m a big fan of merino – nearly all of my clothing layers are merino for a number of reasons. Firstly its a natural product which I’m a big fan of but also because merino still keeps you reasonably warm even when it gets wet. There is a limit to this of course and if its freezing cold and raining, then you are going to need a heavy weight option.

Macpac sell these as ‘Glove Liners’ with the intent that they go under a heavier weight glove to boost your warmth. From my perspective, they suit me as a stand alone glove on just about every hike I do unless the weather is starting to push below around -4° Celcius. This may not be you but why wear a heavy weight glove when all you need is something to take the edge off the cold.cFor the rest of the time when waterproofing is not a major concern, the Macpac Merino Liner Gloves are ideal for providing warmth.

Size wise I have reasonably large hands and given the thinness, the XL sizing fits me snuggly but well. The fingers also a good length which is often a failing in many gloves with manufacturers thinking that most of us have short, fat fingers. Being a lightweight glove, the Macpac Merino Liner Gloves will fold up into almost nothing.

The Macpac Merino Liner Gloves allow for a good level of dexterity and you can undertake all activities except for those requiring very fine motor skills. If you are using a touch screen you do need to take them off. I usually only use these gloves early in the morning or late in the afternoon/evening otherwise they come off and live inside my thermal jacket ready to be dragged out when next needed.

These gloves are a great price at $49.99 (cheaper if you are a member) and the perfect lightweight standalone option or a comfortable addition under heavier gloves.
