Teva Women's Hurricane XLT3 Sandals Review

Teva is a well recognised maker of robust hiking footwear and having started out in 1984 has plenty of experience in meeting the needs of hikers. So I jumped at the opportunity to test the Teva Women’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals. My thinking was twofold – would they work for me and would they displace my favoured Altra Lone Peak hikers?

First up the Teva Women’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals can best be described as robust. The under sole is super tough and heavily notched for great grip on a range of dry and wet trails. The upper sole is cushioned and contoured to provide both support and comfort.

There are four narrow upper straps which means your foot is very exposed to the elements but given the three adjustment options, a customised fit can be achieved easily and quickly. There is added cushioning at the ankle which is usually an area of impact for me but I had no concerns with these sandals. The ribbed fabric straps hold up to the impact of some heavy walking.

Teva prides itself in meeting sustainability standards and the recycled polyester straps, recycled EVA midsole and recycled rubber in the outsole ensure this sandal achieves top marks.

The Teva Women’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals come in a range of sizes from US5 up to US12 – not all manufacturers have a range down to US5 or up to US12. However, half sizes aren’t available so you may need to compromise a little. I opted for US10 which is my usual hiking shoe size and the fit was perfect.

This sandal comes in 13 colours including the usual Black and Beige as well as a range creatively named colour options. I have Sedona Multi which is a combination of pale pink and salmon.

The only negative I have is that these sandals are a little heavy at 640 grams for a pair of US10. However, that weight also translates to the robustness and support you get.

At AUD $170 RRP these sandals are also great value – given you can wear them from trail to street and back again, the versatility pays for itself.

So, will these sandals work for me and will they displace my Altra Lone Peaks? Yes and no! I will wear these sandals on shorter trails in warmer weather but will opt for Altra Lone Peaks on long trails and when the weather is cooler and/or wettter.

• For hikers with a wider forefoot
• For those wanting a robust sandal
