I currently own a pair of the Wilderness Wear Light Merino 170 Men’s Leggings and as someone who has worked outside in colder areas, I have very good tolerance to the cold and find these leggings will suit me well even in snow conditions. Having said that I do realise that many hikers don’t have my cold tolerance or just plain prefer to be on the toasty side. Fo those of you who fall into this category, then this is who the Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Leggings are definitely aimed at.
The companion Wilderness Wear MerinoFusion Duo 300 Long Sleeve Crew Top was originally released in 2019 and more recently the leggings have followed to complete the set. These aren’t just another set of thermal leggings – it’s not until you look closer that you realise that this is a two layered garment. The inner layer that sits against your skin is 100% Pure Australian Merino, and the outer layer is 100% Super Fine Schoeller Polypropylene which provides you with an overall garment weight of 300 gsm from bi-layer knit construction (hence the name). What this means is that you get all the advantages of both materials and virtually none of the disadvantages. Ultimately this pairing of the two seperate layers delivers a garment with high moisture wicking, that dries fast when it gets wet, and also one that holds minimal odour. The flat lock stitching and generous leg length provide plenty of comfort.
Given the 300 gsm thickness this is definitely a cold weather garment and sits at the top in regard to warmth provided by this Australian owned, Australian manufacturing company. The Wilderness Wear Men’s MerinoFusion Duo 300 Leggings are suitable for the colder conditions ranging from mid-late Autumn through to early-mid Spring. Colour wise there is one option, black. Size wise this set of leggings range from S to 2XL which will suit most hikers out there.
One unique thing with these leggings from a male perspective is that they don’t have a ‘y’ front. This doesn’t particularly bother me as it’s not a feature I ever really use anyway. As such, even though this is a male fit it may also suit some females as well. These garments last well and are unlikely to need replacing that often which makes the AUD $160 RRP great value. In my case I only ever replace my leggings every 7-10 years.
So if you are looking at a thermal layer to keep your legs really warm or you are hiking in very cold conditions, then this is a great option. If however you only hike in cool to warm conditions look at one of the lighter weight options such as the Wilderness Wear Men’s Light Merino 170 Leggings.
