The Real Meals Bircher Muesli is the first of the breakfast options from this range that I have tried and after the previous Real Meals tests that we have undertaken I had high expectations. While muesli is typically considered as a breakfast meal that’s purely a personal choice and there is nothing from stopping you from eating this at any time of the day.
Just to provide a some context, over the past 10-12 year my relationship with breakfast on trail has changed dramatically. When I first started doing long distance hiking I would cold soak Overnight Oates which I would eat while still in my sleeping bag, but more recently I will pack up my tent and then eat dried fruit and nuts, and a bar of some sort, on the move about 30 minutes after I start. If however you are a breakfast eater then the Real Meals Bircher Muesli has a lot going for it. Firstly you can choose to rehydrate this Muesli with either hot water or cold water. The recommendations for both are the same which its to add 250mm of water, stir for 30 seconds, and then leave to rehydrate for around 10 minutes, stiring about half way through. We opted for hot water and found that the 250ml of water to be just a bit much as I think of Bircher Muesli being slightly on the solid side so I would suggest adding around 220ml of water and add more if need be. If you do choose to use cold water to rehydrate I’d suggest leaving it for around 15 minutes as I’ve always found that cold soaking freeze dried food always takes longer.
As freeze dried Mueslis go this offering from Real Meals has real fruit prices in it which are very obvious rather than just being an afterthought. The sweetness was well balanced and not overdone but overall I would scream about this one from the rooftop. Taste wise this is what it claims to be but if I’m honest while I found this to be ‘good’ muesli it wasn’t ‘great’ muesli. Price wise this meal is on the higher end for breakfast offerings coming in at AUD $19.99 RRP but given the 504 calorie hit contained in a 370gram service size, it’s very filling.
So what’s the final verdict? While I like this muesli, based on how I currently do my breakfasts on the trail I’m unlikely to take this on my longer trips. If however you are you like to take your time getting away from camp in the morning then give it a try, who knows it may just be for you.
