Teva Men's Hurricane XLT3 Sandal Review

Teva is a well recognised maker of robust hiking footwear and having started out in 1984 has plenty of experience in meeting the needs of hikers. For me this is the third pair of sandals I have reviewed from this range. In reviewing sandals in general I keep two firm things in mind. First, am I going to wear these for hiking and second am I going to wear these as a casual shoe? I came to this review wondering how these sandals would compare to my previous sandal reviews particularly given that the Teva Aventrail has become a firm favourite of mine and now sets the benchmark particularly in my case.

First up the Teva Men’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals can best be described as ‘robust’. The sole is super tough and heavily notched for great grip on a range of dry and wet trails with the upper sole is cushioned and contoured to provide both support and comfort. There are four narrow upper straps which means your foot is very exposed to the elements but given the three adjustment options, a customised fit can be achieved easily and quickly. There is added cushioning at the ankle which is usually an area of impact for me but I had no concerns with these sandals. The ribbed fabric straps hold up to the impact of some heavy walking. Teva prides itself in meeting sustainability standards and the recycled polyester straps, recycled EVA midsole and recycled rubber in the outsole ensure this sandal achieves top marks.

The Teva Men’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals comes in a range of sizes ranging from US7 up to US14 which means that they will suit all but the smallest or largest of feet. I wear size 15 in trail runners and boots but find that when I wear sandals, a US size 14 will suit me well as I don’t have the issue of my toes jamming up against the toe box like I do with enclosed shoes.

This sandal comes in nine colours including the usual Black as well as a range creatively named colour options which means from a fashion perspective there will be something for everyone. In my case I opted for the colour described as ‘Brown Multi’.

Overall I found these sandals to be comfortable, robust and well priced at AUD $170 RRP. When compared to my Teva Mens’s Aventrail which retail for AUD $230 RRP and the Teva Men’s Grandview Max that sell AUD $240 RRP, the Teva Men’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals isnin the mid range for sandal pricing and will likely be one of the biggest factors in your choice.

These sandals sit cosmetically in between a full-on casual sandals and a full-on heavy duty options – the Brown Multi version has four seperate colours in the webbing components. The cosmetic aspects of these sandals may not be a high priority but when it comes to making your choice, this may be what sways your decision one way or another all else being equal.

So what about the negatives? Weight wise as a sandal designed for use in harsh conditions they are on the heavier side coming in at 874 grams for my US size 14 pair. In fact they are only 14 grams lighter than the Teva Grandview Max which are Teva’s ‘heavy duty’ performer. Comfort wise I find the upper construction of the Teva Men’s Grandview Max and in particular the Teva Mens’s Aventrail to be more comfortable. This is mainly due to the additional foam layer that forms part of their strapping system on both, and in the case of the Aventrail, the more cushioned softer sole. Not unexpected given that both of these sandals sit in the top end of the Teva range.

Australians in general don’t seem to be big sandal hiking wearers compared to US counterparts. So, will these sandals work for me based on my criteria identified above? The only time I wear sandals hiking is on short formed track where I don’t need to worry about snakes or sunburn. From the rare times that I do wear sandals for hiking, my go to option still remains the Teva Mens’s Aventrail, even at the higher price point. Casual use is really where these shoes are going to come into play in my case. So where I want something a bit ‘dressier’ and not so obviously ‘recreational’ then this is where the Teva Men’s Hurricane XLT3 Sandals will be what I choose.
