Scrubba Wash Bag Review

This is a unique product and one aimed very much at travel of all types. If you are the sort of person who only stays in upmarket hotels and uses their services then the Scrubba Wash Bag probably won’t be for you. If however you tend to do your thing in remote areas where there are no facilities, or you like doing things for yourself as you travel and don’t want to spend money in the process, then the Scrubba Wash Bag is a well worth considering.

When we hike I layer my clothing and apart from underwear and socks, I wear the other clothing items for about 6-8 days and for most hikes then have a rest day to catch up on podcasting and social media while my aging body recovers. I don’t always stay in a place that has washing facilities but I do my best to clean my clothes. This typically involves washing them with fresh water to get the bulk of the dirt off before putting them in a sink, quite often with dish detergent. As you would expect, my clothes smell clean but this sort of washing doesn’t remove the dirt stains, no matter how much hand rubbing I do.

The Scrubba Wash Bag, which is promoted as the world’s smallest washing machine, takes the hand washing option to the next level. I will still do a rinse and quick hand wash to remove mud or excess dirt and then put my clothing into this bag with fresh water and clothes detergent which takes the cleaning of the clothes to the next level.

The inside of this wash bag has a built in ‘wash board’ which if you then knead your clothes like dough for approximately 30 seconds, you end up with relatively clean clothes. If however you do your wash for three minutes then it is the equivalent of a machine wash, although that will depend on how dirty your clothing is before you start. To help out with the washing process there is a small clear window so you can see how much dirt has come out of your clothes and whether you need to spend more time in the washing process.

The bag itself comes with instructions printed on the outside so you will never forget the steps in the washing process. The Scrubba Wash Bag takes up very little space and when folded or rolled for transport is about 16cm x 6cm x 6cm and weighs at 143 grams. Even as a hiker this isn’t a great impost but falls within the luxury category. As a car camper or general traveller its supper light and compact enough to you can carry without much impact. The upside is that you can get away with less clothing making this the ultimate travel and camping essential.

Colour wise by far the most common version you see on the market is the green colour. In fact I wasn’t even aware that it came in other colours (white and black) until it came time to do the review. In addition, the Scrubba Wash Bag is essentially a specialised dry bag so when it’s not in use you can store other items in your pack.

Whether you take this with you hiking will really depend on how important having clean clothes on trail is to you but for car camping and general travel, this is a great accessory retailing at AUD $69.99 RRP which adds to its value. best of al it will last for years.
