This is the latest of the Wilderness Wear women’s long sleeve tops we have recently reviewed. The Light Merino 170 is lightest weight of the 100% superfine merino tops.
Wilderness Wear is an Aussie company that makes all its gear in Australia from Australian merino wool. We love merino clothing for outdoor activities especially hiking because they are hard wearing, soft to the touch, wick moisture away and are odour resistant.
The Light Merino 170 Long Sleeve Crew Neck Top is marketed as a thermal activewear and as a base layer. This top is very lightweight and its a true base layer – best won under other layers. This is partly due to the close fit of the garment and also its light weight. While I wear t-shirts of this weight during summer, the long sleeve make it impractical for warm to hot weather. Wilderness Wear helpfully suggest this top is best for cool to moderate weather.
This top comes in Black and sizes from 8 to 16. I wear a 10 and the fit is on the snug side of ‘slim fit’. If you like more room to move, you should think about going up a size. The body length is good as is the sleeve length – I have longish arms and this top had me covered!
This top is super soft to the touch and the double sewn flat seams add to the comfort and durability. At AUD $130 RRP this top represents value for money.
If you’ve read any of my previous clothing reviews, you’ll know that I tend to ignore some garment care instructions when washing. If it doesn’t survive the dryer, it won’t survive in my house. I put this top through the dryer and it survived the experience!
The Wilderness Wear Light Merino 170 Long Sleeved Crew Neck Top is best as an under layer for those cold days on the trail.
