Recently I was provided a with a Wilderness Wear MerinoFusion Ultra 100 Race Tee for testing. All I had to go by was the thicker 160 and 190 versions and while they form part of the larger family of MerinoFusion products on offer from Wilderness Wear, each of these fabric weights feel very different so I wasn’t sure how this 100 gram per square metre option would feel. Straight up this has become my go-to tee shirt and I would dearly love a long sleeve version of this top. This top is pitched as an urban/trail running/demanding hiking tee due to its very light weight material which suits my preference for lightweight tops. I can always put another layer on to warm up but given my preferred hiking temperature sits around 12-15° Celcius that isn’t always required.
This top is one of the thinnest on the market and has an almost silky feel to it. I have this worn tee on a variety of hikes so far including a recent hike that started at around 10 degrees and once I started walking I was warm enough. I have also worn this top during a number of hard uphill hikes, hard enough that I was sweating but because of the lightweight weave on this material, it dries out reasonably quickly.
Colour choice is limited to this red version with blue stitching. While I would prefer have a choice of colour, I don’t mind this red version but given I wear my hiking gear also for casual wear, the blue stitching isn’t doing me any favours. Having said that, the stitching is ‘flat locked’ so it doesn’t chafe.
Size wise Wilderness Wear is always generous on the body length and this top is no different which I find a rarity in mens clothing. While on size, there is a good range of sizes ranging from small to 2XL so there’s going to be a size to suit the majority of hikers.
Cost wise this top is AUD $110 RRP which is average for a high quality top like this one with the added bonus that its Australian made and using Australian Merino.
As mentioned this is a great top and one I automatically reach for when I’m after a short sleeved top.
