This new tee top is aimed at the hiking market and for me this is one of the most unique tops that Wilderness Wear has produced in a while. mainly because of the Neon Yellow colour with black stitching. I’m a big lover of bright and lairy clothing, and this top very much falls into that category. Previously this top came in a bright orange colours (see below) but that seems to have gone off the market at the time of this update. The top is also available in black for those who don’t light black colours. Although I will typically wear long sleeved tops for most of my hikes, I purchased this one for both hiking in cooler weather and casual wear just because I liked the look of it.
This top is made of a hybrid fabric made of 70% superfine Merino wool and 30% Tencel (wood pulp) which combined with the flat lock stitching, makes for a comfortable wearing garment that can be used in a range of temperatures. This top is advertised as a ‘relaxed fit’ and while I opted for an XL given that I weigh 107 kg and have a 112 cm chest, I found the sizing to be on the larger size. As someone who prefers my tops on the tighter side, a ‘large’ size would have been a better choice. If you prefer a looser fit then the sizing chart is a good guide. The length of this top is also very good and is a common feature across the Wilderness Wear range. The neck on this top is also a good size and as someone who lifts weights, it fits well. Weight wise this tee is also relatively lightweight as you would expect – the size XL is only 173 grams.
Temperature wise this fabric is a lighter weight material and will suit hikers for use in the warmer weather but could also form part of your layering system. I can see myself wearing this top during spring, summer and autumn.
This top is priced at AUD $120 RRP which is comparable to similar merino hiking tops of this weight and is worth every cent; particularly when it supports Australian growers and manufacturers.
Wilderness Wear is an Australian company that has been producing technical outdoor clothing since 1989 at its base in Preston, Victoria. The team prides itself in its ‘exceptional and dynamic’ range of clothing. Wilderness Wear is also now putting a lot of effort into the environmentally friendliness of its products and packaging. The packing is cardboard, the display hook is metal, and the ‘plastic bag’ is a biodegradable material that decomposes so you can’t get much better than that. They are also accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA) which is a nice way of saying they look after their staff ensuring that all local workers, including outworkers, are paid appropriately, receive all their legal entitlements and work in safe conditions.
So if you are after something just that bit different and are into short sleeved tops then this one is worth considering.
