The North Face Women’s ThermoBall Full Zip Jacket would have easily been my favourite and most worn outdoor jacket. I wore it ALL the time. You only have to check out the photos of me on the Australian Hiker website, on Facebook and on Instagram – I really was wearing that jacket ALL the time! But all good things must come to an end and The North Face is phasing out the ThermoBall.
So I got my hands on the Terra Peak Jacket and was very pleased I did! The Teak Peak appears to be ‘plumper’ and feels cosier to wear. This is because the insulation has been ‘blown’ so it’s fluffier and warmer than jackets of similar weight.
It didn’t take long for this jacket to form a key part of my layering system. Depending on the weather, I can have one to three layers underneath and if its really cold, my Marmot PreCip Nano Jacket as an outer shell. It doesn’t get easier than that! I can be comfortable, warm or toasty depending on the temperature and at no time have that ‘bulky’ feeling. The North Face categorise the Terra Peak as a ‘standard fit’ but I think that is underselling because it looks a little more stylish on than others.
I do feel the cold and this is as close as I will ever get to going ultralight. For me, a lightweight thermal jacket needs to:
The North Face Terra Peak is all these things. It is a synthetic jacket and that means it will keep you warm if it gets wet and will dry more quickly than a down jacket. It is super lightweight and stays light when wet.
This jacket has a range of great features including four-way stretch underarm gusset for additional mobility and piping on the cuffs which hugs your wrists and provides additional protection from wear.
This jacket folds away into its own pocket which is a bit large for my liking. At night I stuff the jacket inside my Long Sleeve Crew Top to create a pillow – works like a treat!
This jacket comes in two colours – Black and Oxidised Bronze – the latter being greenish in colour which makes sense if you think about it and is the colour I have! It also comes in sizes extra small to extra large. I have small size and there is still plenty of room for layering up.
I love this jacket – it provides warm without weight and can stand up to heavy outdoor wear. All there is left to say is – buy one!

The North Face is obviously doing something right because when we travel overseas we see a lot of rip off versions
