The North Face Mens Sunriser Hoodie Review

Over the past few years I’ve become a big fan of hiking hoodies which is a trend that is coming our way courtesy of the USA hiking fraternity. I was recently given the opportunity to test out one of the newer entrants into this market, The North Face Mens Sunriser Hoodie. The North Face describe this hoodie as “designed for fast miles in warm conditions, delivering lightweight coverage without overheating” and from testing this out I agree, but with a caveat.

Before I get on to how this hoodie performed I’ll deal with the look and appearance first. Like most international companies The North Face has targeted their colour ranges and in Australia’s case its the  mid-green colour (Algae) for the men and a lighter green option in the women’s top (Opal Frost). I’ve shown this colour below but when provided with a sample for test I was provided with a bright blue colour, officially called ‘dusk Blue’ which is what is sold on the USA market so keep this in mind. Fit-wise, I’m 185cm in height and currently weight 110kg and this XL size top fitted me well with a good body and sleeve length which is an area I often struggle with.

This top is made from 100 % Polyester that consists of  89% recycled polyester combined with 11% of a proprietary polyester called LIGHTRANGE™ which has fast drying and anti-odour properties. The material itself has a light checkered texture which gives it an upmarket look. The sleeves come with a thumb loop which given the good sleeve length is more about using this top in a layering system and stopping the sleeves from riding up when you put another layer over the top.

So how did it perform? To provide some context I have spent a majority of my life working in the outdoors so tolerate cold weather very well and as such I tend to wear lighter weight layers than most people as I find it’s the hot weather that impacts me. For me the perfect hiking temperature sits around 12-16°C which is why I do most of my longer hikes in Autumn to Spring. While The North Face aims this top at ‘warm weather’ I found that even sitting in the shade at 20°C I was too hot. As a polyester fabric this top dries quickly and maintains warmth even when wet.

Price wise this top sells for AUD $120 RRP which given its features and appearance is good value. Overall I found this top to be comfortable, good looking, and well made and as much as I love wearing it in my case I’ll save this for the cooler months of the year when the temperature sits around my favoured 12-16°C range.

The North Face Mens Sunriser Hoodie Algae colour (green). This is the men’s colour that is available for sale in Australia.

We Like

  • LIGHTRANGE™ is a fabric-level finish that combines three benefits: UPF protection, anti-odor technology and moisture management
  • FLASHDRY™ materials offer enhanced moisture management to help keep you comfortable – dries quickly when wet
  • Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) 40+
  • Good length in both the sleeves and the body (I’m 185cm tall)

We Don't Like

  • Limited colour choice in Australia, algae (Green).
  • For me this is a cool to warm or as part of a layering system in colder weather

Best Uses

As a standalone layer in cooler weather or as a second layer in your layering system
