Teva is well known for its range of robust walking and hiking sandals and is increasingly becoming popular for its range of sturdy hiking shoes and boots. The Grandview Max GTX is one of Teva’s top range hiking boots so I jumped at the opportunity to test them out.
The story goes that Teva began in ‘the Grand Canyon back in 1984, when a river guide rigged two Velcro watchbands to an old pair of flip flops that created a shoe that wouldn’t float away.’ Today Teva is best known for comfortable and durable footwear.
The Grandview Max GTX Women’s Boot continues the tradition of comfort and durability. This boot has some great and unique features such as the ‘Universal Heel Lock System’ which ensures your feet don’t slide forward during downhill descents. It also has a Vibram Megagrip outsole that offers maximum traction and a waterproof GORE-TEX membrane that keeps your feet dry during the wet.
When I first put on these boots the sturdiness and protection from rough terrain was immediately obvious. The boot has great ankle support as you would expect but the adjustable heel lock ensures a greater level of adjustment than any other boot I have worn. Add the extensive number of eyelets and abundant lacing, and you’ve got a boot that ensures your feet aren’t going anywhere other than where you put them!
I have tested these boots on a range of trails and during some really chilly, minus temperatures but my usually icy toes stayed warm and cosy – even while wearing mid weight socks. These boots offer heaps of ankle support and are great for rocky and uneven trails. I like ‘feeling’ the trail underfoot and often wear trail runners but sometimes you need more protection. The rocky trails on the Snowies Alpine Walk is a good example of where I needed extra support but didn’t have it – the Grandview Max GTX would have been perfect for that trail. Hindsight is always a great thing!
This is a good looking boot – the styling is part traditional and part urban casual. It comes in two colours Honey Brown/Birch and Black. I have the Honey Brown/Birch colour and really like the multi colour styling. The Grandview Max GTX sizing ranges from US 5 to US 11 which is going to suit almost everyone.
Those who have read my shoe and boot reviews know that I have a wide foot so I’m always a little nervous when I slip on a boot given, well they’re a boot, which means the fit has to be spot-on otherwise the stiffness and height around the ankle will make for a very uncomfortable time. The minute I put these boots they were just right. Of course you feel the extra stiffness and heaviness – it is a boot after all – but somehow it seems to work with your foot rather than against.
There were a couple of (pleasant) surprises with this boot. The first is that despite the sturdiness a pair of size US 9.5 boots weigh 988 grams which in the world of robust boots is at the lower end. The heel to toe drop in these boots is 8mm – way more than I’m used to and 8mm more than my zero drop Altra Lone Peak 8 Trail Running Shoes but the surprise is that I didn’t really notice it that much – more proof that the heel lock system works.
I really like everything about the Grandview Max GTX from the fit, the durability to the styling. I’m really happy with my boots so f you’re looking for a hard working boot then you can’t go past Grandview Max GTX.
Here are the technical features and my translation of what they mean:
These are a great fitting boot that handle really tough terrain
