Sea to Summit Cool Grip X−Tumbler Review

A few years ago Sea to Summit released the X-Mug and X-Cup and these collapsable drinking vessels have been a very popular addition to the outdoor kitchen range. One negative is that you needed to hold them at the rim in a particular way when drinking hot beverages otherwise they could be a bit hot to hold.

The Sea to Summit Cool Grip range has solved this problem and consists of the smaller X-Tumbler (350 ml) and the larger X-Mug (480 ml). The difference with the Cool Grip range is the ribbing on the outside of the container that acts as a heat sink which means the heat inside the mug doesn’t reach your hands. The mug is definitely on the larger size at 480 ml capacity and should suit my large hands but I find it just a bit too big for a one handed grip so a two handed hold is needed.

Consistent with the X-range, the key feature is the ‘flexible, collapsable, European standard compliant, food grade silicone’ which means the mug is soft to hold and easily collapses down for packing. The new ribbing on the outside of the container provides a bit of extra rigidity which doesn’t worry me one way or the other. In addition to protecting against the heat, the external ribbing also adds 23 grams to the weight – this isn’t as big an impost as it sounds and makes a big difference in the comfort when using this mug.

The Sea to Summit Cool Grip X−Tumbler comes in two colours, Black and Sea Foam (aqua) and sells for AUD $17.99 RRP which is an additional $2.50 price premium over the standard X-Mug. While the addition of the heat fins is more of an evolutionary addition rather than a revolutionary one, it’s worth the minor price impost.

I have used both the mug and the tumbler sizes and while I find benefits in both sizes, I have a strong leaning towards the tumbler as it fits comfortably within my large hand and contains just the right amount of liquid.

We Like

  • The external ribbing on this tumbler insulates your hand from most of the heat
  • Unbreakable so you can squash it into your pack
  • Folds flat so it doesn’t take up much room and easily slides into a small pocket
  • Calibrated as a measuring cup which means you’ll get the right amount of water to rehydrate your food
  • Food grade flexible silicone to protect you from bugs
  • BPA free so you won’t be ingesting any nasty chemicals as you drink

We Don't Like

  • Be careful you don’t grip too tightly as you may spill your drink

Best Uses

  • A good sized drinking vessel, particularly if you only want to use one hand
