Radix Nutrition Peri-Peri Review

The Radix Nutrition Peri-Peri meal is a plant based meal that also happens to be gluten free. Like other meals in the range, these meals have their own unique qualities that make them well worth considering.

All the meals in the Radix Nutrition range have very attractive packaging that grabs your attention which is half the battle in this ever growing segment of the market. The packaged meal size appears to be very small and you could be fooled into thinking there isn’t much food in the bag, but its comparable in terms of calories and often lighter weight-wise when compared to other brands. The other plus with this compact packaging is that it takes up less space in your pack.

As big an eater as I am, the 600 calorie sizing (606 calories actually) in this case is a decent sized meal for a solo hiker but is probably just a bit too small for two people. Sodium wise it has 891 mg sodium which is within the daily allowances and it doesn’t taste overly salty.

Texture wise like other Radix Nutrition meals there is some crunch and texture to the meal which I love. Given that smell, taste and texture all play a part in the enjoyment of a meal, this offering from Radix hits the spot on smell and texture at least.

So what about taste? I’m a big fan of spicy food and my measure is based on whether it makes my head sweat but I know I’m in the minority here. If someone mentions Per-Peri then I expect some spiciness and for me this is where this meal gets a bit strange. When we tested this meal we found that it does contain some ‘heat’ but it does so without the spiciness which is a pretty good trick.

While there aren’t any nuts in this meal, Radix advises that it is made in a factory that processes nuts so keep this in mind if you have nut allergies. On the plus side this meal is plant based and gluten free which helps to make it more accessible if you that’s you.

The rehydration recommendation is 5 minutes but I suggest letting this run for around 7-8 minutes. The package also suggests using 250 mls of boiling water, but I find this recommendation a bit on the watery side so I’d suggest cutting the water level back to around  215 mls and if the texture is a bit stiff, you can always add a little more water.

One thing the Radix packaging doesn’t have that other outdoor companies offer, is a base that opens out. Having said that the interior of the Radix packaging doesn’t have any narrow corners to trap food and these packs are quite stable so not having a base that opens out is not a big issue. I would suggest placing the pack down on a stable flat surface.

The packaging contains all the relevant nutritional and ingredient information you need. The ingredients, apart from protein isolate, are very recognisable with Radix mainly using real ingredients.

Price wise this meal sells at AUD $14.90 RRP and is comparable to other brands of the same size, even more so when you look at the quality of what you get – all in a tiny package. Freeze dried meals as a generalisation aren’t cheap but the time you save doing your own meals at home as well as on-trail preparation, is well worth the cost.

For me this meal is perfectly edible and won’t fail to warm you up but as a spice lover, I prefer the taste of the other meals such as the Falafel, Indian Curry or Barbecue Beef.

The Facts

  • 606 calories
  • 26 grams protein
  • 37 grams fat
  • 48 grams carbohydrates
  • 12 grams fibre

This is a plant based meal

We Like

  • Great texture just like the rest of the Radix meals
  • Plant based (vegetarian) for those who are into that but its great for vegetarians and non vegetarians alike
  • Gluten free
  • Freeze dried. This takes much of the weight out of the meal and helps to limit the weight in your pack
  • Available in a range of calorie sizes to suit your needs
  • Very compact package which helps reduce the bulk in your pack

We Don't Like

  • The main negative of any commercially prepared dehydrated or freeze dried food is the cost. If you share this meal between two people then it comes out at approximately $7.50 per person. It really comes down to whether you have the time to make your own and if you can achieve the same flavour
  • Unlike other hiking meals, the bottom of the packet doesn’t open out to a broad base
  • Made in a factory that produces other meals the contain nuts so be careful if you have a nut allergy
  • Reduce the amount of water suggested from 250 mls down to 215 mls to get a less watery texture
  • While this meal has ‘heat’ its a bit bland from a spice perspective

Best Uses

  • Great option for a quick, filling and easy lunch or dinner
