Sea to Summit Cool Grip X-Mug Review

A few years ago Sea to Summit released the X-Mug and X-Cup to the market and these collapsable drinking vessels have been a very popular addition to the outdoor kitchen range. One negative of that range is that you needed to hold them in a particular way when drinking hot beverages otherwise they could be a bit hot to hold.

Enter the Sea to Summit Cool Grip range consisting of the smaller X-Tumbler and the larger X-Mug. The difference with the Cool Grip range is the ribbing on the outside of the container that acts as a heat sink which means the heat inside the mug doesn’t reach your hands. This mug is definitely on the larger size at 480 ml capacity so should suit my large hands but I find it just a bit too big for a one handed grip so a two handed hold is needed.

Consistent with the X-range, the key feature is the ‘flexible, collapsable, European standard compliant, food grade silicone’ which means the mug is soft to hold and easily collapses down for packing. The new ribbing on the outside of the container provides a bit of extra rigidity which doesn’t worry me one way or the other. In addition to providing a protection against the heat, the external ribbing also adds 12 grams to the weight which isn’t a big impost.

The Sea to Summit Cool Grip X-Mug comes in two colours black and Sea Foam (aqua) and retails at $19.99 which is an additional $2.00 price premium over the standard X-Mug. While the addition of heat fins is more of an evolutionary addition rather than a revolutionary one, it’s worth the minor price impost.

We Like

  • The external ribbing on this mug insulates your hand from most of the heat
  • Unbreakable so you can squash it into your pack
  • Folds flat so it doesn’t take up much room and easily slides into a small pocket
  • Calibrated as a measuring cup which means you’ll get the right amount of water to rehydrate your food
  • Food grade flexible silicone to protect you from bugs
  • BPA free so you won’t be ingesting any nasty chemicals as you drink

We Don't Like

  • Be careful you don’t grip too tightly as you may spill your drink
  • This mug is a bit big for smaller hands

Best Uses

  • When you need a large space saving drinking vessel
  • When you have larger hands
