This style of bag is the real work horse for many bikepackers and is suited to carrying all your bulky equipment that you don’t need to access during the day. Construction wise this is essentially a large tube with a roll top opening at each end that allows you to keep a snug tight pack around what you’re carrying up to a maximum size of 14 litres. The durable material and roll top ends keep everything inside nice and dry.
For me this is where my ‘camping gear’ lives including my compact 2 person tent, my sleeping bag, sleeping mat, sleeping bag liner, inflatable pillow and camp stove. The ability to fit all of this gear in is going to rely on having lightweight versions in each of these categories and with that also comes an increase in price.
Out of all the bikepacking bags I own, the set up of this bag is the most crucial because if you get it wrong it can potentially impact on the gear and brake cables which will make your life a misery so take your time in attaching the velcro strapping system and cinch down the straps. Just like in hiking, once you get use to your packing system it will become second nature.
The cover image in this review comes from the manufacturers and shows a curve style of handlebar which will limit the size of the bag. The image at the bottom of this review shows this bag set up on my bike which has the flat style of handle bars and allows you to make full use of the bag’s capacity. To pack this bag you will need to have a couple of practice runs to ensure that its evenly spaced and weighted across the handlebars and once you know what that looks like, you do all the packing from one end.
If you are looking at doing overnight backpacking trips then this style of bag is a definite must for your kit.
