Real Meals Banana Oat Porridge Review

The Real Meals Banana Oat Porridge will be considered as a breakfast meal by most people but there is nothing stopping you from eating this at any time of the day, particularly when the weathers really cold. Over the past 10 years I’ve progressively moved away from breakfast meals preferring bars of some type which I can eat on the move. I do realise that I’m in the minority here and most hikers will appreciate a good breakfast, whatever that means for you as an individual.

First and foremost this is essentially a banana porridge and as porridges go its pretty tasty and even though it contains added sugar it’s sweet without out being sugary. If you look in the image below you can see the very obvious freeze dried banana chips but once this meal is rehydrated the banana pieces blend in with the oats and while you can taste the banana they disappear into the oats.

The Real Meals Banana Oat Porridge is a great meal to start the day containing 500calories which will provide a good energy boost long past breakfast.

To rehydrate this meal it’s recommended to add 250ml of boiling water for 10 minutes to produce a finished meal size weighing in at 370grams. Consistency wise this amount of water worked well.

At AUD $19.99 RRP the Real Meals Banana Oat Porridge is towards the higher end of the single serve freeze dried range and this is where it becomes a bit difficult. While I’m quite happy to buy and eat freeze dried main meals if I am going to eat porridge then I’m inclined to make and eat overnight oats which works out to be a much cheaper option without a lot of effort

So where does it leave the Real Meals Banana Oat Porridge? If your time is limited and you don’t want to go to the time and effort of making overnight oats then you can’t go past this option, the taste certainly justifies it.
