Comfort has a big impact on whether we get a good night sleep on a hiking trip. For each of us there is a list of things that will enhance or detract from our perception of comfort. For me the factors include being not too warm (or too cool), the ability to roll over easily (without getting wrapped in my sleeping bag), being ‘covered’ and having a clean place to lay my head.
Those of you who don’t use a sleeping bag liner should think deeply about investing in one. Your sleeping bag does get dirty from the natural oils from your body as well as all the dirt that you collect on trail and it is a complex exercise to clean which for the durability of the sleeping bag, you shouldn’t repeat too often! And the best way to protect your treasured sleeping bag is to use a sleeping bag liner.
I have been using sleeping bag liners for most of my life when I hike and what I use will depend on the expected conditions. I own a number of liners from the basic lightweight models that can be used as standalone in hot weather or just to protect my sleeping bags all the way through the heavy duty models that provide an additional thermal increase to your sleep system.
For most of my hikes I prefer to use a lightweight compact liner purely to keep my sleeping bag clean and for whatever reason the industry seems to be shifting towards the high end thermal styles and for this reason this is why I love the Naturehike Ultralight Sleeping Bag Liner, its a model that constructed simply without all the frills.
The liners come with a storage bag that packs them down to a compact size – 15cm x 6cm. They are easy to use pull the liner out of the carry bag and lay it inside your sleeping bag. Placed inside your sleeping bag, the liner will provide an extra insulation layer, all be it very minimal to keep you that little bit warmer. In warm weather, you can just sleep inside the liner without using a sleeping bag which is good for me because even in the hottest weather, I need to be covered! The advantage over my previous 100% silk liner is that these liners don’t feel as ‘tacky’ in hot conditions.
This liner comes in a single length (210 cm long) with the top opening being 80cm wide and the foot end being 60cm wide.
Price wise the Naturehike Ultralight Sleeping Bag Liner comes in at AUD $34.99 RRP which is about as cheap as a sleeping bag liner gets and represents great value for a very lightweight liner and it well worth considering.
