It has been a very long time since I trail-tested a pair of Keen hiking boots and even longer since I’ve tested the Keen Targhee – my trusted Keen Targhee II mid boots are still the ones I reach for when I know the terrain is going to be wet, muddy and cold.
So when I got my hands on the Targhee IV Mid WP (waterproof) Boot I was very happy! And given some of you may be thinking about a new pair of boots to keep you warm and dry during the coming winter months, this review is very timely.
Many will know that Keen produce a range of sandals, shoes and boots for outdoor adventures in any environment, terrain and weather. They really do know outdoor footwear!
The Targhee IV Mid Boot has distinctive styling that says ‘I’m ready for the hard work’! Having worn trail running shoes mostly for the last few years, the extra level of toe and ankle protection was immediately noticeable. These are the boots I should have worn on the Snowies Alpine Walk to protect my feet from those endless rocky trails and punishing stone steps!
The waterproof version of the Targhee IV has a nubuck leather upper, a removable Luftcell PU insole for long-lasting comfort and 100% recycled PET laces.
The women’s size US 9.5 comfortably fits my wide foot although if I was going to wear these boots during a multi-week warm weather hike, I might opt for the next size up. The weight is 1162 grams which is much more than I’m used to but it didn’t take long for me to acclimatise. These boots are available in size 5 all the way up to size 11 which will suit most female hikers.
There are a couple of colours to choose from – I have the Alloy Granite Green which is mostly grey with pale green trim, and Brindle Nostalgia Rose which is a few shades of brown with a pale pink trim.
I have worn these Targhee IV in a range of conditions and varied terrain on short and longer hikes and they have not let me down. They provide plenty of room in the toe area, and also have locking eyelets at the top that allow you to adjust the ankle tension. I also cross over the laces between the third and second from the top eyelets to allow ‘looser’ lacing around the toes and firmer lacing closer to the ankle.
The KEEN toe guard is also very effective and provides plenty of protection on rocky terrain. For me this is key….I have a knack of stubbing my toe on the smallest pebble! A drawback with previous versions was the soles didn’t handle dry, powdery terrain as well as I would have liked but Keen has addressed this through a range of features including the multi-directional lugs.
So, if you’re looking for a hard wearing and comfortable mid boot that will protect your feet in a range of conditions, then you can’t go past the Keen Targhee IV.
Yes – these are great boots for a range of conditions that also look good!
