As a blogger I take a lot of photos and video footage. Its reasonably easy when there are two of us to swap the camera/phone over and take photos of the other person. Sometimes when you are travelling solo or when you want to record a video on the phone/camera with the two of you without it looking like a selfie image, you find yourself getting creative propping up your technology. Having said that it’s not always possible. I remember recording a video for social media at Christmas one year and we headed to the nearby bush for authenticity. I was stunned at the lack of suitable logs and rocks to sit my phone upon so we could record – without the help of my little Joby stand I wouldn’t have been to get decent video footage.
The Joby GripTight™ ONE Micro Stand is sold as a small compact stand for mobile phones. When you go online or into stores that’s what you will see as advertised. This stand is extremely lightweight at 46 grams and also extremely small in size folding down to an almost non existent accessory. The stand folds out quite easily and the phone clamp is spring loaded so it will take virtually any mobile phone on the market. There is a small ball joint that allows for the phone to be tilted to get the right image angle. In my case my mobile phone shown in the images below includes a battery case and this Joby stand manages the extra bulk quite well.
Having said that remove the expandable mobile phone grip and you are left with a screw thread that is standard for cameras which provides a small stand for compact cameras; a feature that you never see discussed. Most higher end compact cameras will shoot reasonable video however I tend to find that with most of my videos going to social media its just easier to use the phone for this. The advantage with this stand for cameras is the ability for a delayed shoot allowing you to set up the camera in a stable position on a delayed shutter release and get back to the chosen spot to get an image that you can’t do when the technology is in your hand.
Price wise this little unit isn’t cheap at around AUD $41.00 RRP however is usual to see this unit on sale for under $50 so keep an eye out. As is the case with anything hiking related you can buy cheaper stands but they are heavier and bulkier. If you want an extremely small and lightweight stand then this little unit is your best choice.
You may decide that a stand isn’t necessary for your hiking needs but if you are into photography and videography and more often travel solo, then this is an accessory worth carrying.
