Freeze Dried Goat Feta Crumble Review

Freeze Dried Cheddar Cheese has become a readily available food product for outdoor adventures but did you know that you can also purchase freeze dried feta in crumble form? Now for most people cheddar will do the job but if you want to change it up, feta cheese is a great way to go. I must own up here and say that I purchased the freeze dried feta many months ago and it had been sitting on my test bench (e.g. dining room table) for a long time before I finally got around to tasting it. In fact, I tested this feta cheese just after it went past its ‘use by’ date and I’m pleased to report, it was still in very good condition.

I use feta in salads and frittatas – typically the fresh product purchased from my local supermarket. I must admit even though I bought this bag to use on the trail, I found it particularly useful when cooking at home.

When I opened the 100 gram bag, the freeze dried product looked a bit like grainy washing detergent – no insult intended (see image below) but it definitely didn’t taste that way. While it didn’t have the texture of fresh feta, it tasted almost identical to the crumbled feta I buy. In fact, the saltiness I tend to associate with store bought feta was also there.

Ingredients-wise this is feta cheese and nothing else so it’s about as natural as it can get. It’s worth noting that while feta does contain lactose, it’s much lower than standard cheese so is a great option for those who avoid lactose. The 100 gram bag comes out at 1290 kilojoules with the suggestion that this is three seperate serves but that’s really going to be up to the user.

Price wise this product isn’t cheap at AUD $22.00 RRP per 100gram bag and more expensive than freeze dried cheddar, but for those who use feta in cooking and want to take it on-trail, this is definitely a great option for hikes any longer than a day. Unlike the cheddar which I would eat as a snack on-trail in around 1-2 days, I tend to use the feta as a meal additive both at home or on-trail or with flat bread as a lunch.

It’s worth noting that the company that makes this cheese appears to have shifted to wholesaling rather than direct retailing so I have provided a purchase link below.

This is a great cheese options for those who want something just that little bit different and one that is very versatile so keep this in mind you head out on-trail.
