Knots are one of those basic skills that every outdoor adventurer should know even if it’s only the basics. Over the years I have had various situations where I have needed to tie knots and out of sheer laziness I will often default to the Bowline knot and while it works its often not the correct knot with other, often better options available depending on my need. Years ago I used to use a knot tying book (which I still own) but thats the last thing I’m going to carry when I’m out bush and this is is where a phone app comes in handy. I must admit I spent a fair amount of time looking for a new knot tying app when my old one didn’t transfer over to my new phone as the app maker limited access to the USA.
I chose this particular app for a number of reasons. firstly even though I’m an Apple user I always tend to0 opt for apps that area available for both Apple and Google options mainly because they are more likely to be upgraded in the longer term. This app is built very similarly to other apps in that its animated and will have an animation ability that takes the user through the tying process in an animated style and as part of that you can also flip the know if you want to see it tied from the other side. One thing that I liked about this app is the information link located in the top right hand corner of the image that talks you through knot uses, warning that identify how to get the best of of each knot, and identifies similar knots and when to use them.
The ‘home page’ when you open this app is essentially a table of contents that groups knots into various uses such as ‘boating’, ‘arboriculture’, ‘climbing’ etc and while there is no camping or hiking group there is however a ‘scouting’ grouping which is going to cover most of our needs. In addition there is a decorative section for those into using knot tying for decorative/craft purposes. For those that really know where knots and their uses well there is also the ability to search for knot style eg ‘bends’, ‘hitches’ etc.
The only downside of this app is that there is no free option so you need to commit to this app without a trial period. Having said that at AUD $7.99 RRP (US $4.99) one off charge this app sits in the typical price range for apps of this type. So if you are interested in developing some basic knot tying skills then this is a great app no matter phone brand you use.
Tying knots is one of those skills that everyone should have and this app is a handy on the spot aid for when you need a specific type of knot
