The Campers Pantry Creamy Chicken Pasta is the last of the current Expedition Range that we had to test. When I try out a batch of meals I subconsciously order them, and do so without rhyme of reason. I think when I do so there is some bias because I’m not a fan of chicken in my pasta. Go figure!
Preparing this meal is relatively simple. Once you flatten out the base of the bag and tear the top, add 300 ml of boiling water before letting stand for a total of 15 minutes. At the five minute mark you need to stir the meal. I suggest adding a little bit less water and at around the five minute mark, if it’s still a bit solid, add a tiny bit more. This way if you prefer a more solid option then it works well but if you’ve added too much water, there’s not a lot you can do.
Price wise this single serve meal is AUD$18.99 RRP at the time of review. For a single serve meal this is about average as pricing goes starting at 100 grams freeze dried and ending up with a 400 gram result so it’s pretty filling. In addition Campers Pantry now offers an XL version that as a rehydrated meals comes out at 500 grams which will definitely do two people as an evening meal!
Campers Pantry meals have a good level of protein content. This is so important particularly over the longer trips when you are doing big days and need to help rebuild muscle at the days end. While this meal has a bit less protein than other meal offerings, it still has 25.9 grams of protein. Salt levels are also reasonably low which I appreciate as many people don’t add salt to their meals.
Now for the taste test. I am a hiker that likes a bit of a punch in their meals and for me, given I’m not a fan of chicken pasta, this one is a bit bland. Most hikers will find this meal offering perfectly fine but in my case it won’t displace the Campers Pantry Chicken Cacciatore as one of my more favoured meals.
