Campers Pantry Thai Green Chicken Curry Review

I have been big fans of Australian outdoor food company, Campers Pantry, since we started Australian Hiker and for good reason. The company’s focus is on producing high quality real, freeze dried food, that looks and tastes like you would expect. If it’s a meat based dish, it’s real meat and not soy protein. On the whole the ingredients used are natural and aren’t a list of chemical flavourings. The thing I really like is that the meals aren’t a copy of what is already on the market. For those of you who have been into outdoor activities for a number of years, you’ll know the quality of freeze dried meals has greatly improved over the past five years, in part due to companies like Campers Pantry forcing everyone else to lift their game!

So how did the Campers Pantry Thai Green Chicken Curry go? I need to state first up that while I am a curry lover, a good curry needs to cause my head to sweat but I realise I am in the minority on this. In talking with Campers Pantry, like many of their competitors, the meals are crated for the ‘average’ hiker and as such, the degree of heat and spiciness is less than what I would like. Having said that you can always add spice to a meal, but you can’t take it out. Traditional green curry tends not to have heat and if anything is on the sweeter side of the curry meals, so is something that anyone should be able to eat.

Taste wise this meal is everything that a Thai Green Chicken Curry should be. Having said that green curry isn’t what I order in a Thai restaurant but that’s my personal taste and I’m probably in the minority here.

Price wise this single serve meal is AUD$18.99 RRP at the time of review. For a single serve meal this sits in the average pricing and given the rehydrated result is a 400 gram meal which we will actually share between the two of us on our couple hikes, its great value for a quality of the meal. If you are a very big eater(s), Campers Pantry now produces an XL size (125 gram  freeze dried – rehydrated 500 grams rehydrated). Both size are very compact in your pack.

One thing that most people don’t think about with hiking food is the level of protein which you need to help repair muscle at the end of the day. In the case of this meal the single serve option sits at 29.2 grams which while not the highest on the market, is at the upper end of meal offerings.

Preparing this meal is pretty simple. Once you tear the top of this bag off, the preparation process is quite easy; just add the 300 ml of boiling water before letting stand for a total of five minutes. We usually allow an extra minute or two but find that the constancy provided by the recommended amount of water provides a good texture. We will typically eat out of the bag and while its a shorter and more compact bag, we still would recommend a long handled spoon such as the GSI Essential Spoon-Long.

So will I eat this meal on my hiking trips? While I would be happy to, I’m not a green curry fan and have my favourites including a larger number of meals from Campers Pantry Expedition Range. The average hiker will however love this meal as a standalone option or with a rice accompaniment.

On shorter trips I have other ‘go to’ Camper Pantry meal options I will choose first but on longer trips I prefer a broader range of meals so I don’t get tired of a particular meal and in my case this one will definitely be added to my mix!
