Freeze dried meals form the basis of many outdoor enthusiasts meal choices and currently the there best known companies that are readily available in Australia are Back Country Cuisine, Outdoor Gourmet, and Campers Pantry. Back Country Cuisines meals are available in single and twin serves, the Outdoor Gourmet meals in twin serve only, and the Camper Pantry in single serves. These three brands are stocked by most of the major, and many of the smaller outdoor stores around the country. This list doesn’t consider serving size but rather taste alone so this may influence your choices. If meal size is an issue then look at our Top 10 Single Serve Freeze Dried Meals list.
Please note that I have a love of spicy food and a good curry for me is one that makes my head sweat. I also dislike flavour enhancers and emulsifiers that are present in some meals as they make me feel like I’ve had a big night drinking. While I realise everyone’s taste buds are different, I think you will enjoy the meals we have selected. At the time of releasing this review we had sampled 32 out of the range of 34 freeze dried choices available on the Australian market with the remaining two being very hard to find.
The following meal choices are my top 10 freeze dried meal choices readily available on the Australian market listed in order :
My favourite freeze dried meal is currently from Back Country Cuisine due to a combination of both taste and texture. After a couple of weeks on the trail its good the texture is amazing. I can very easily eat a twin serve meal all by myself.
The one and only beef dish and my favourite meal from Outdoor Gourmet.
My equal favourite meal from Campers Pantry and the best freeze dried spaghetti on the market at the moment. This meal will very firmly sit in my hiking rotation.
My equal favourite meal from Campers Pantry and a vegetarian option to boot. This meal has a bit of a spice kick and great texture and will very firmly sit in my hiking rotation.
Another chicken meal and my second favourite meal from Outdoor Gourmet. There is a lot of spice in this dish, be warned. It does warm you up on a cold night though.
Yet another Chicken dish but this time without the spice.

And another chicken meal. Also very spicy.
My second favourite meal from Back Country and the best way I can describe this is sweet and sour chicken.
Surprise surprise there’s vegetarian meals in my top 10 and for me this says a lot. While I usually prefer my curries spicier I really enjoyed this meal even though it is smaller in size than the other meals on offer from Campers Pantry.
One of only two lamb dishes in my top 10.
