Teva Men's Grandview Max Sandals Review

While the majority of hikers wear enclosed footwear for hiking, others I’ve come across on-trail wear sandals. In my case I only ever consider sandals as casual wear, or at least I did until I recently tested the Teva Men’s Aventrail Sandals. My issue with wearing sandals out bush is that they manage to pick up small pellets and twigs – I find I need to clean them out on too regular a basis. In addition, I had a bad experience with foot sunburn many, many years ago. I also tend to hike in areas where I come across snakes so definitely prefer enclosed footwear for the majority of my hikes.

The Teva Men’s Grandview Max Sandals are the second in the Teva sandal range that I have worn and when I compared them to the Aventail model there were similarities as well as noticeable differences. So what were they?

First up the best way to describe these sandals is that they are a ‘beast’. By that they are noticeably burlier coming with a very robust Vibram MegaGrip outsole for traction and durability. They just scream foot protection, grip and durability. While they aren’t as comfortable as the Aventails, neither of which I wear socks with, they are still comfortable. In common with bother pairs was the comfortable neoprene-like insert that prevents the webbing from rubbing on your foot which is often the case with leather/leather look sandals. Even when wearing these sandals on both short and long walks there was no rubbing on my feet. This construction means that most of your foot is protected from the sun but as a result you can’t call this a ‘dress sandal’. This Grandview Max model isn’t as soft underfoot as the Aventail and the colour is limited to all black.

As expected the traction on these sandals was excellent in both dry and wet conditions down to what has to be some of the most ‘grippy’ Vibram MegaGrip sole you’ll ever see on a sandal. Understandably, they performed well. The tradc off with this robustness is the weight and my size 14US weigh in at 888 grams which is heavier than some lighter weight boots. Given they are candles with plenty of airflow I didn’t really notice the weight.

Price wise these sandals are in the upper end at AUD $240.00 RRP however for what they offer they are great value for money.

So would I wear these as a hiking sandal? In my case no, purely because I find those small twigs and dirt that end up getting both on top of and underneath my feet too annoying and as such I prefer enclosed footwear. If however you are a sandal wearer and want something bullet proof, then these are the ones for you.

We Like

  • As far as a sandal goes these are bulletproof with a Vibram MegaGrip outsole for traction and durability
  • Three points of adjustment for a secure fit
  • A robust sole with head duty  traction
  • Sandal length is generous
  • A neoprene protective layer under the strapping to increase comfort

We Don't Like

  • Heavy as some enclosed boots at 888grams for a pair of size 14US

Best Use

  • Great for hiking or walking in dry conditions but I wouldn’t wear them on long trails when the track is likely to be cold and wet
  • For hikers with a wider forefoot
  • For those wanting a bullet proof sandal
