This product, a dedicated shoe laundry bag, is a bit left of field and I came across it scrolling on Instagram. After doing a bit of research I decided to give it a try. Now I need to own up here and say that a good pair of hiking trail runners will last me for around 1200 km and given I live in trail runners permanently these days including day to day, I also wear them for my hiking adventures. What this means in practice is I will burn through just over three pairs a year. Unless I’ve done some serious trails, I typically don’t worry about cleaning them as I will often run multiple pairs including a non hiking versions for street use before being relegating to going bush.
Previously I would put my hiking shoes in the washing machine as is and if you have done this you will know it is a noisey process particularly when they go in the dryer. The idea with these shoe cleaning bags is that the material softened the physical process to such a point I didn’t even hear them in the dryer because it dampened the noise, but the noise reduction was just an added bonus. The real benefit of these bags is that the inside looks a bit like a mop and the tassels (see images below) help in the cleaning process. I used two pairs of shoes for the test, one pair in each bag (more on this later). I also cleaned my filthiest shoes, which I now use for gardening and hadn’t been cleaned in over two years,. Bothe pairs now look brand new apart from the decking strain on them!
One thing to note is if you do a search on Amazon you will come across literally dozens of options available to purchase but I chose this particular version not based on price, AUD $18.99 RRP, but on the size. I wear size 15 US trail runners and if you don’t pay attention, the size of many options means you would be lucky to fit a small women’s shoe, let alone a large men’s shoe. A word of warning here, my go-to shoe, the Topo Athletic Vista Trail Runner, is physically large and while I managed to fit both shoes into one bag, you can see in one of the images below that one bag looks a bit stretched. Given I don’t clean my shoes that often, in future I will do one shoe per bag. If your footwear is a couple of sizes smaller then one bagger pair will work well.
This shoe cleaning system isn’t going to be for everyone but if you an average hiker/user who gets a year or two out of their footwear, then this is an inexpensive option.

Before cleaning. These are an older trail shoe I now use for gardening and this is what they usually look like!

After cleaning, not perfect given there is some decking stain still on the soles but they almost look brand new
