Sea to Summit Hydraulic Packing Cube - small Review

This is the second in this packing cell range I have reviewed and in all honesty, the review is going to mirror the original medium size I previously tested. This range of packing cells currently comes in five different sizes ranging in volume from 0.75 litres to 9 litres with the small size being 1.5 litres in capacity.

These packing ‘cubes’ as the name suggests are rectangular in shape which has its pros and cons. Because of the shape there is the ability to stack these packing cells which you can’t really do with dry bags. While I’m unlikely to use the larger sized cells for hiking preferring the freeform dry bags that you can stuff into tiny spaces, I can see myself using the smaller cells for various bits of electronic gear.

Where I see the benefit of these packing cells is for use in car storage and storage of products at home but this isn’t just because of the stackable shape. These cells aren’t waterproof but rather water resistant and with that also dust resistant/insect resistant so if you are travelling in areas where fine dust tends to get everywhere, these are a great option. In addition, I store a lot of my hiking and camping gear in the garage so I like to keep the more sensitive material gear away from the various insect pests.

These packing cells come in a range of muted colours but in addition, the top of the pack has an opaque plastic covering that allows you to see inside without opening each cell which is a handy feature if you’re using multiple packs of the same size.

The small size pack is priced at AUD $41.99 RRP so it isn’t cheap as a storage option. Given its many features its best to look at these high quality storage devices as a long term purchase, and one that you’re going to have for many years.

So while I’m only likely to use this smaller cube for hiking when it comes time over the next year to redo my gear storage cupboard and get my car set up for some upcoming road trips,  these cubes will feature as part of that.

We Like

  • Range of neutral colours
  • Rectangular shape allows for stackable packing
  • Lightweight and adventure-ready: TPU laminated 70D ripstop Nylon
  • Dust proof and water-resistant: PU coated zips and RF welded seams keep the elements out (IP6X Certification for Dust Ingress Protection)
  • Easy organisation: The translucent TPU window panel allows you to view the packing cube’s contents
  • Grab handles: Welded, low profile Hypalon grab handles for convenient handling or lashing

We Don't Like

  • Not the lightest packing option on the market
  • Dearer and heavier than the lightweight dry bags of comparable size
