For the majority of my involvement in hiking I have taken the attitude that I will work with one sleeping bag that caters for the coldest conditions I experience. Given I prefer to hike during the colder months of the year, that approach has worked well for me. The other benefit is that you are only purchasing one sleeping bag.
However, my thinking has now changed! This was driven by the opportunity to test out the One Planet sleeping bags and opting to try out some summer weight bags. This decision also aligned with my recently completed hike on the Great South West Walk and the expected night time temperatures of around 8°C.
One Planet produces a wide range of sleeping bags to cover just about any need you can think of. My main aim in choosing a new bag was to be as lightweight, and compact, as possible. For that reason I opted for a One Planet Nitrous Sleeping Bag (lower limit of comfort rating for males/females: +2/+9°C). The Nitrous sleeping bag is designed for the warmer months and is never going to accompany me on my mid winter hikes. This is One Planet’s lightweight range aimed at gram weenies who count every gram.
Shape wise this bag is sold as a tapered rectangular shape and while it looks like a ‘mummy bag’, it definitely has the space particularly in the foot box. I have size 15 US feet and have plenty of space for my feet!
The Nitrous range comes in three sizes; small, regular, and large and compared to other sleeping bag manufacturers, the length is generous. I’m 185 cm in height and while the regular bag is designed for hikers up to 187 cm, I opted for the large size which only added 5 grams in weight and still used the same stuff sack as the the small and regular sizes use.
Once you choose a size, your next choice becomes the degree of warmth. Again there are three warmth options that meet the internationally accepted ISO 23537-1 standards and use 800-850 loft non-PFC hydrophobic down to get there.
M ratings/F ratings:
The sleeping bag shell fabric is 10 D Vapour Vent (V2) fabric – lightweight and down proof by construction – which offers excellent breathability, comfort and non-PFC water repellence. Colour wise there is only one choice. The outside of the bag is grey with red highlights with the inside of the bag being red. I must admit I love the look and feel of this sleeping bag which I realise is probably not something high on people’s priorities but if you can make a sleeping bag that ticks all the boxes why not make it look good!
The One Planet Nitrous Sleeping Bag also uses the industry standard full-length YKK #5 locking zip and has an anti-snag slider that opens at both ends, allowing extra ventilation above the ankle if fully opened or at the bottom or the top depending on your needs. This bag doesn’t open to a full quilt but once unzipped it only leaves a small foot pocket allowing you to flatten out the rest of the bag.
In regard to the ‘anti snag’ claim it’s actually not a false claim. I’m always very cautious in how I zip up my bag to ensure that the zip doesn’t catch on the bag fabric but I will usually get the occasional snag. Not in this case. At no stage did my zip get caught on the bag material when I zipped myself up at the night.
Performance wise I had a range of temperatures conditions to deal with on the Great South West Walk that included a couple of nights of around 12+°C where I slept in my undies (maybe too much information!) with the bag flattened out. I also experienced a number of colder nights where I was camped near a river or lake and that meant I was fully clothed and included one night with the hood up which was more about wanting to test the hood rather than actually needing it.
Most high-end sleeping bags, particularly those aimed at colder weather, use a series of down baffles to minimise air movement within the bag and while the Nitrous has a minimal baffle along the zip only, I didn’t find that at any stage that I was getting cold. As a general comment, I found this to be a very comfortable sleeping bag that fit like a glove and on those occasions when I did need to zip up the bag as the night got progressively colder, at no stage did I feel like I was going to ‘break’ the zip; it was a very easy process.
Another comment I would make at this point is I’m a very restless sleeper and I found that when I turned, the bag went with me rather than ending up with the zip in the wrong spot. That is a reality as sleeping bags go!
Price wise the One Planet Nitrous Sleeping Bag in the large size retails for AUD$579.00 RRP which is on par with other brands in this warmth/feature category.
I must admit that until I used this bag I didn’t know what I was missing not having a dedicated lighter weight bag. This will now be my bag of choice on my warmer hikes. So if you are a warm weather hiker or are looking for a second bag that doesn’t compromise your comfort, then this is a great option.
