This book titled Bush Tukka Guide for Kids Book is a book aimed at an audience of readers aged 7-12 and as the name suggests talks about Australian bush foods and their interaction and uses by Indigenous culture.
This book starts out providing an overview of indigenous culture and but in a book aimed at kids the front end of the book is a bit text heavy. Where kids and for that matter adults will really get into this book is is when the discussion of bush tukka starts. The book is broken into sections starting with plants, then animals which also includes insects and seafood, before moving onto proving some recipes which I wasn’t expecting.
These sections are well set out describing the particular plant/animal including an easy to read description, and then cultural and other uses. The recipes look simple enough to make, and good enough for both kids and adults alike. There is a small section that talks about where to buy the necessary products but thats more about the spices and the freeze dried product. For this those of you in warmer climate there is a Lilly Pilly Popsicles recipe which I’m keen to try once the berries become ripe in my local area. I must admit that had to look for crocodile mince and meat, and managed to find it in one of our specialty butchers so will be keen to try out these recipes over the coming months.
As an adult I enjoyed this book but suggest that at 144 pages in length younger children will probably only cherry pick through the book whereas older readers swill get the most from whats on offer.
