Australia’s National Parks by Public Transport Vol 1

Book Review

Australia's National Parks by Public Transport Vol 1

This book titled Australia’s National Parks by Public Transport – Volume 1 details how to visit 63 such parks in the states of New South Wales (39 parks) and Queensland (24 parks). While not all national parks nor necessarily the ‘best parks’ are covered, those included in volume 1 are readily accessible from major cities and towns.

When we review walks for the Australian Hiker website we do so with the assumption that hikers will drive to the trailhead. While that provides a more flexible and often direct mode of transport, its not necessarily the most suitable nor the cheapest way and over then past few year I have accessed public transport in the forms of planes, trains and buses to get to and from trailheads. Australia’s National Parks by Public Transport – Volume 1 focuses on utilising trains and buses to get these parks. As someone who doesn’t access public transport that often, when I do it always requires an internet search to do so but this book takes much of that searching out of the way. This book directs you to resources that are useful when visiting parks, including park location maps, public transport access, park websites, things to see in the parks, staying in the parks (e.g. camping and nearby accommodation) and things to do in the parks (with an emphasis on walking).

While you will need to do additional research to find out what walks are available and the details associated with them, often getting to a particular park is half the battle, and if you are a public transport user this book will help to identify which parks are accessible in this fashion. Depending on which state, users over 60-65 who aren’t working full time, can access subsidised public transport similar to teenage users.

This book highlights key park use options as well as accomodation availability from tenting to commercial options for those users who want to do multi-day forays into a specific parks.

Hikers who only access hiking destinations by personal vehicle may not find this book useful but, it is a great option for public transport users who need to identify the best way to access our national parks.
