AeroPress Go Coffee Maker Review

The AeroPress Potable Coffee Maker has been around for quite a while but while its relatively lightweight it really wasn’t that compact and from my perspective took up more room in my pack than I was willing to set aside. More recently Aeropress has released a newer version to the market, the Go Coffee Maker which is essentially a smaller more compact unit which surprisingly enough is actually heavier, but there is a reason for that which I’ll explain in a minute.

I’ll be upfront and say that quality wise nothing beats the Wacaco Nanopresso for quality coffee but you pay the price with a more expensive RRP, a smaller coffee, and a much heavier unit (419grams) and this is where the Aeropress Go Coffee Maker fills in the niche. And hey its leave freeze dried coffee or coffee bags of dead.

This coffee maker weights in at 337 grams and as mentioned is heavier than its older physically larger sibling but thats because the storage case for this unit is actually a large cup and when you take that into account it isn’t really that heavy as far as plunger type coffee makers go. While you could ditch the cup and use your own this kit is really designed for use with the kit cup and you will also end up with fiddly bits that need to be stored in a bag anyway.

The AeroPress Go Coffee Maker is best considered as a pressurised filter coffee machine. Each time you make a cup of coffee you insert a filter paper into the bottom of the unit, add the coffee, add the water, and push the plunger column down squeezing the water through the coffee for your end result. I have used this unit with my plunger coffee of choice and found that the quality of coffee that it produces is excellent. You may need to try a few options here to choose the right coffee blend.

If you are using this unit on trail you are likely to be using powereded milk so the quality will drop from that but if you are drinking black coffee then you wont really notice anything different from what you drink at home. I found that to fill to kit cup up I need to refill the water column about 1.75 times.

The AeroPress Go Coffee Maker as a whole comes with a number of bits and pieces and unlike its larger sibling the only bits you will leave at home is the unwanted filter papers just carrying the amount you need in a dedicated little plastic holder

One of the main advantages of this unit offers over the Wacaco Nanopresso is that you can create the amount of coffee that you want rather than being locked into the small amount provided by the Wacaco.

Clean up of the unit is reasonably easy. All you need to do is disassemble the unit, dispose of the used filter paper and ground, and then wash. There really nothing to mess up here. Storage wise the plunger unit stores within the outer column and as it pushes through the column itself the rubber plunger isn’t going to end up getting needlessly compressed on a permanent basis.

Overall a good unit, in fact it’s a far better option than its larger sibling and while its not as good as the Wacaco Nanopresso it leaves freeze dried and coffee bags for dead so if you can’t do without coffee on trail then this unit is well worth considering.
