120-Choosing a camping site

Show notes

I have memories of camping dating back over 40 years and in many cases these memories were positive ones that consisted of some amazing experiences shared with friends and family. On the other end of the scale there were also trips where things went horribly wrong because we chose bad sites to camp.

In this episode we discuss things to consider when choosing a place to put you tent to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable nights sleep.

Podcast overview

Choosing a camping site

In this episode we look at 10 considerations for choosing a camping site. Get it right and you’ll have safe enjoyable sleep. Get it wrong and you won’t be happy.

  1. Book ahead
    • Do you need to book camp sites or even book the trail?
  2. Trail rules
    • Know what you are and aren’t allowed to do on a trail
  3. Distances between campsites
    • This will affect where you camp and potentially how far you hike each day
  4. Set up your campsite during daylight hours
    • A big help not just for when you first start out
  5. Look up
    • Unstable trees branches can be life threatening
    • Choosing where to camp in relation to sunrise
  6. Look down
    • Don’t camp on some poor little creature’s home
    • The impact of a slope on your campsite
  7. Camping near water
  8. Site durability
    • What does this mean and how does it impact on site selection?
  9. Shelter from the wind
  10. Camping in groups
    • Give each other some space

Next week’s podcast, episode 121, is the first of our on trail episodes from our Hume and Hovell thru-hike – 426 km long from Yass to Albury.
