Since Campers Pantry commenced operating their range of meals has always been unique rather than trying to copy what already existed on the market. We have been fans of what they produce so when the Kashmiri Range was released late last year we were keen to test it out. As a generalisation freeze dried meals tend to be on the blander side with the average Australian preferring spice levels to be, well, not so spicy. It’s always easier to add a level of spice but you can’t take it out.
True or not when I think ‘Kashmiri’ I think ‘spicy’ and with this our first test that is exactly what you get. If you don’t like spicy food then this meal isn’t for you. Fo those who do, this meal has so much to offer. The spiciness creates a heat that will definitely warm you up and all provide that full feeling.
This meal in its freeze dried form weighs 85 grams and comes in a small compact packet. When you add the recommended 175 mls of boiling water and wait the suggested ten minutes it delivers a good consistency and a rehydrated meal weighing 250 grams. That may seem small but the end result is a meal that contains 6745 kJ (1612 calories). We have tested more than 100 meals since 2016 and this one packs the biggest energy punch so far. Based on that, this meal offers a huge bang for your buck providing you can cope with the level of spice. So much so I will be including a number of this meal on my menu for my upcoming thru hike on the Heysen Trail.
Campers Pantry recommend eating this meal with naan bread or rice and while that would certainly increase the meal quality that’s really going to be a personal choice. I’d be happy either way. I found that the taste and consistency amounted to a great vegetable curry that I really enjoyed.
Price wise this single serve meal is AUD $15.99 RRP at the time of review and given the calorie load and taste, this is great value.
Protein wise this meal offers 29 grams per meal which is a great input into our the daily calorie input. Salt levels are also reasonably low which I appreciate as many people don’t add salt to their meals coming in at 68.2 mg per 100 grams
One comment I would make here is that you need to carefully read the Allergin Advice panel if food allergies are an issue. This is important these days regardless of the brand of meal. While this particular meal contains dairy, peanut and sesame, it has also been prepared in a factory that processes a number of other allergins.
As a spice lover this was a great meal as the first in the range to test and one that I look forward to eating on-trail.
