While the majority of hikers wear enclosed footwear for hiking, others I’ve come across on-trail wear sandals. In my case I only ever consider sandals as casual wear, or at least I did up until I wore the Teva Men’s Aventrail Sandals. My issue with wearing sandals out bush is that they manage to pick up small pellets and twigs – I find I need to clean them out on too regular a basis. In addition, I had a bad experience with foot sunburn many, many years ago. I also tend to hike in areas where I come across snakes so definitely prefer enclosed footwear for the majority of my hikes.
So I came into this review with a preconceived outcome.
Straight up the Teva Men’s Aventrail Sandals are the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn and I came to this conclusion after putting them on for the first time, they felt that good. I think for me it was a combination of the cushioned sole and the comfortable neoprene-like insert that prevents the webbing from rubbing on your foot which is often the case with leather/leather look sandals. This construction means that most of your foot is protected from the sun but as a result you can’t call this a ‘dress sandal’.
I have worn these sandals on short hikes and long walks and where traditional sandals rub my your feet even after short distances, the Aventrail didn’t and even for walks between 2-3 kilometres still felt very comfortable.
These mens sandals come in a black-red or a green-blue (Eclipse Flash) colour and they are also available in a women’s fit. Appearance wise the women’s versions look a bit dressier but are essentially the same sandal.
The sole of these sandals can be best described as a sitting midway between a straight street sandal and full-on hiking sandal as far as traction is concerned. In fact my testing on-trail really shows how good the traction is in both wet and dry. I found I needed to take it easy on the powdery steep conditions when descending but in all other conditions they performed well.
Price wise these sandals are in the upper end of the price range at AUD $230.00 RRP however for what they offer they are great value for money.
So the end result is that while I won’t wear these sandals for ‘bush’ hikes, I have settled in to wearing them in warmer weather around the suburbs because in addition to being very comfortable, they also allow my feet to breathe.
