Wilderness Wear Men's Light Merino Long Sleeve Crew Neck Top Review

I hadn’t worn tis top before and while I own/have owned heavier weight garments from Wilderness Wear, my preferred fabric weight for a long sleeve top sits around the 150 grams. This  means I can wear it in mid summer so I thought the Wilderness Wear Men’s Light Merino Long Sleeve Crew Neck Top which has a fabric weight of 160 grams, would work for me; and I was right.

The heavier weight Wilderness Wear long sleeve tops such as the Wilderness Wear Merino Mid 195 Long Sleeved Crew Neck Top or the Wilderness Wear MerinoFusion 190 Long Sleeved Zip Neck Top feel thicker and weightier but that’s to be expected. However, in hot weather I can’t wear these given I tend to save these tops for cold weather or as part of my layering system.

At 185cm in height I’m tall but not overly tall. I find a lot of garments tend to be short in both the body of the garment as well as the sleeves. Wilderness Wear sets to address this issue so I found the length to fit me well. While I’m talking about garment size, Wilderness Wear has this top available in sizes ranging from XS-6XL which means that as a hiker you will find a size to fit you.

The downside to the garment is really just the colour choice (black only) and while that is a cosmetic issue, black colours tend to make you hotter during the summer months so here’s hoping they will come out with some other colour choices in the future.

I have worn this top in a variety of temperatures and find that when its around 0℃ it is not warm enough as a standalone garment. However I have found that it works for me as a standalone top in temperatures between 10-24℃. I haven’t worn this top in hotter temperatures but in all honesty, I found that at 24℃ the top was pushing the upper limit. This means that there is an overlap with the Wilderness Wear Cumulo Merino Long Sleeved Tee Top which is what I wear in the height of summer.

I have come to love this top and will wear it in the shoulder periods of spring and autumn mainly as a standalone top.

We Like

  • High quality 100% merino fabric that is very comfortable to wear
  • Double sewn flat seams prevent chaffing and keep this garment comfortable no matter how heavy the pack or how many layers you wear
  • Excellent length in both the body and arms of the garment which is great for those of you with a bit of extra height
  • Australian wool keeps you warm and minimises smell
  • Australian owned, Australian made, Australian Wool
  • Huge range of sizes from XS all the way up to 6XL

We Don't Like

  • Another colour would be nice but that’s it!
  • I would prefer a high neck top if I’m using this as a standalone top
