I came across this book when I was researching the Pacific Crest Trail and while I purchased other factual books that would provide information to plan a potential trip this book caught my eye. I like to read peoples real life stories of their hiking experiences and this book gave a personal overview from first time thru hiker, Carrot Quinn, as she undertook her 156 day trip from Mexico to the Canadian Border in 2013.
I actually had this book before I had even come across both Wild and A Walk in the Woods and while I love all three of these books Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart (An adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail) is different having no movie to go with it like the other books do so made me imagine what was occuring.
This book is set out in a journal format rather than a novel as Carrot describes day by day what she is thinking and feeling throughout her hike; sometimes quite graphically; Sex yes, drugs yes, but no rock and roll.
For those actually planning a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail then this book provides a unique mental picture of one young womens journey.
I enjoyed this book but Gill couldn’t really get in to it and couldn’t finish it. I think for many people this book will be polarising and you are likely to fall into the love it or hate it category. If you are seriously considering hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, or just like hiking books then give it a go.
This book is available in both e-book version, as well as in paperback version from Amazon.
You can purchase Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart from Amazon Australia or from Amazon USA
