An Australian company produces a range of towels for beach and other outdoor activities which now sell in over 70 countries. When I was first approached to test out their range I opted for the ‘workout’ (gym) towel as it sits within the ‘smaller more compact size range’ that will suit most hikers who are looking for a towel that isn’t too heavy and is not going to take up too much space in your pack.
These towels use an antimicrobial material that means that when they are scrunched up in your pack and are slightly damp, they aren’t going to smell like a lot of towels can. In addition they come with a cloth hook midway along one edge so if the towel is damp when you head off in the morning, you can hang it off the back of your pack to dry out. The other benefit of this towel is it also dries relatively quickly.
This towel comes in nine different colours so there is something to suit everyone if colour is something you care about. While one side is a solid colour, the reverse side has a pattern so if you’re using this as a gym towel you always put whatever side you choose (for me it was the patterned side) down so you aren’t absorbing other peoples’ sweat.
Size wise these towels aren’t as small as the ultra lightweight towels but they still won’t take up too much space in your pack when rolled or folded. These towels retail for AUD$49.00 which is comparable to other similar towels of similar size.
In using this as a towel after a shower I found that it absorbed water quite well but in doing so didn’t end up a sodden mess like normal towels do. Even in an unheated environment, this towel was dry by the morning and after repeated use, there was almost no stinky smell.
The towel comes in a lightweight plasticised pouch and while its not obvious that this is a storage sack, you can certainly use it for that if you want to keep a damp towel away from other gear.
While I do own lighter microfibre hiking towels which are lighter, I find that in adding some additional weight as this towel does, it has added a larger and more durable towel option so I am torn about what to use on-trail. In using the lighter weight towels I am very conscious about not being overly rough with them while the Tesalate Workout Towel feels durable and doesn’t feel like you are going to do damage.
In my case I probably spend more time in the gym using a towel than I do on-trail and this towel has now replaced my decades old bath towels that I use at the gym so in that respect, it is a winner.

Tesalate Workout Towel colour range, nine colours to choose from!

Hanging loop on the Tesalate towel. This is only a small feature but its a really handy one to have

Tesalate Workout Towel patterned side. The pattern on one side means that you will use the same side on the gym equipment and keep the sweaty side up
A great towel option for both workouts and one that works equally well for outdoor adventure activities
