Many hikers will often baulk when it comes time to clean and/or waterproof down clothing and sleeping bags but this process is relatively simple once you know what needs to happen – it’s something that doesn’t need to be done regularly but does need doing occasionally. Typically I am hard on my clothing but when it comes to my sleeping bag and down jackets I do tend to look after them fairly well. Having said that you can’t help but get dirt and grime or oils from your body (particularly on your sleeping bag) and at some stage you will need to put it through the wash.
From my perspective I don’t have a set cleaning regime and will usually wash my sleeping bag and down jacket when I return form a long trip where it’s been a given that they will need a clean. Ideally down gear should be washed in a front loader or hand washed as I’ve heard some horror stories with the older top loaders where they get caught in the agitator and ripped. The instructions for using the Storm Down Wash are as follows:
Price wise at AUD$12.99 RRP this product is competitively priced for a down cleaning product. Using only 75ml in a front loader or tub means this 300ml bottle will last for a few years, if not longer, unless you are doing a lot of hiking. So if it’s been a while since you have cleaned your down gear (or never) then it’s time to consider doing so and the Storm Down Wash is a great option.
