The Real Meals Wilderness Stew was the last of the Real Meals, main meal, I had to test and I realised that I had been deliberately leaving it to last purely from a preconception. I have never been a traditional stew fan and given that the average freeze dried meal tends to be on the blander side, so as not to offend the average user, I didn’t have high hopes.
As expected this meal is stew containing 22% beef along with all the other traditional ingredients such as potato, mushrooms, tomato and herbs, oh and did I mention beer. It does taste like a real stew but for my own personal tastes, as a spice lover I found it to be a bit bland. Nothing the addition of a addition of a small amount of salt and pepper wouldn’t fix. Typically Gill and I will split one of these meals between the two of us but in this case it became my lunch on the day of test and I struggled to finish it even as a large male. I was also surprised that the blandness became less of an issue the more I ate as I focused on the texture, in addition to the taste of the ingredients coming through. As such I can see this meal being a favourite for the average outdoor enthusiast. Also on the plus side is because this meal contains real meat this single serve packet provides 32.8 grams of protein which is on the upper end of a typical freeze dried meal and just what you need at the end of a hard day to help rebuild muscle.
Sodium/salt wise its low at 84mg/100grams and isn’t really noticeable, and as as mentioned a tiny bit more salt, and some pepper, would boost this meal from my perspective. Try it out first before you add any additional spices!
Water wise the recommendation is to add 375ml of water and 10 minute rehydration time worked well resulting texture is as you would expect for a stew and the end result is a 475g serving which could easily be shared between two providing you aren’t big eaters.
At AUD $21.99 RRP the Real Meals Wilderness Stew is towards the higher end of the single serve freeze dried range but it is filling and a bit moreish. This meal wont be first on our menu choice but I will add it into the mix for longer hikes and the average hiker will likely to appreciate this option.
