Real Meals Tom Kha Gai Review

As I work my way through the Real Meal range I’m appreciating the flavours, they really have produced some unique meals, many of which haven’t been seen on the market from other suppliers.

When it came time to test out the Real Meals Tom Kha Gai meal I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew that this was an asian meal of some sort but had no idea of what I would find even when reading the packet. The best way that I could describe this meal is as a solid version of a chicken laksa. Texture wise this meal is contains thin rice noodles. and you can definability taste the coconut flavour, you can definitely taste the chicken pieces and supposedly there is a ‘zingy lime aftertaste’ but I wouldn’t have picked it without reading it on the label. This meal also contains a good range of vegetables pieces. Having said that there is no strong heat or spiciness that will upset hikers who like their food on the blander side.

The recommendation is to add 375ml of boiling water for 10 minuts to produce a finished meal size weighing in at 485grams which is large as far as a single serve meal goes. As mentioned this reminds me of a solid chicken laksa but I would be interested to try it again doing more water to see what it’s like as a ‘soupier’ consistency.

Sodium wise the sodium level is high at 404mg/100grams which is considered high but like other Real Meals offering you can’t really taste the salt level.

At AUD $19.99 RRP the Real Meals Tom Kha Gai is towards the higher end of the single serve freeze dried range but I really like this meals and its unique amongst freeze dried food offerings. This is another great meal from Real Meals that I will add to my hiking meal rotation and one that I am happy to recommend.
