The Real Meals Mexi Nachos is one of those meals that warms the stomach on a cold day. I’m a big fan of Mexican food but its worth noting that this meal only has a very low level of spice which I’d class as ‘heat’ and the majority of hikers wont be offended by this meal.
First up let’s look at the ‘pros’ of this meal. This is essentially a plant based meals however does contain egg and dairy products, and gelatine so depending on how opposed to can’t really be called vegetarian as such. As mentioned this meal left me with a warm feeling after eating it and given it comes with a 500 calories load it will help support you on the long cold days. It definitely has that Mexican/nacho taste as well and size wise is a good single person meal. Price wise at AUD $19.99 RRP is sits within the typical freeze dried meal pricing range so is overly expensive.
First up let’s deal with the negatives. Other companies offer similar products and seperate out the nacho component to add just before eating thereby keeping that crunchy texture however in this case the nachos as mixed in with the rest of the ingredients and as such go soft to eat. If Real Meals had of separated out there nachos I would have scored this meal at a higher rating as the texture of dry nachos provides a big boost.
The main one is the price as this is a single serve meal that retails for AUD$ 27.99 RRP which, price wise, puts this at the top of the single serve freeze dried meal range, on the Australian market at the time of this review. If you only look at price alone then you could be forgiven in ruling out this meal as an option as part of your hiking menu. The only other negative for me is that while this meal is tasty it’s still on the lower end of the spice range which in all honesty will suit the majority of hikers.
Protein wise this meals contains 20.7 grams which sits in the lower range of freeze dried meals which isn’t really a negative as such unless you are looking for big protein after long hard days and this is where a meal like The Real Meals Venison Casserole comes in
By far the biggest ‘pro’ of this meal is the high level of protein with this single serve meal containing 57.8grams. Typically high protein meal offerings from other companies, including the rest of the Real Meal Range sits at 30-35 grams of protein so this meal packs a protein punch which is really important on the big days on trail when you need this protein to help rebuild muscle.
The taste as mentioned for me a is a typical meat casserole, all be it with the unique venison taste and calorie wise contains 593 calories/serve which by no means is the highest on the market but still decent. Water wise we added the recommend amount of water which is 300ml and this worked out to be a good consistency. The sodium level in this meal is 460mh which just hits the mark to be considered high’. While there was a saltiness to this meal it wasn’t over overpowering and thats coming from someone who doesn’t add salt to their meals.
Sodium wise this meals sodium level is high coming in at 1140mg which is one of the highest on the market. Having said that as someone who doesn’t add salt to their diet I didn’t find it overpowering. I think in my case this was probably one of the reasons I like this meal.
The recommended amount of water to add was 250mm and this amount was spot on. This is the third Real Meal that I have tested and there water recommendation has been spot on to date providing a good consistency. I left this to rehydrate the recommended 10 minutes and this time was also spot on.
So what’s the verdict. Its this the best Mexican meal on the market; no, but I did enjoy it and found it to be warming and filling and would be happy to eat this on any hike given the opportunity.
