Freeze dried potato mash is one of those staples for outdoor adventures but more so for car campers than hikers unless you happen to be into meal prep at the end of a day hiking.
While you would assume that a potato mash offering is a ‘side dish’ rather than a meal. You can certainly eat it as such however, this mash is sold as a single serve meal. Given this rehydrated meal contains 400 grams of potato mash, I struggled to eat this as a standalone dinner, there was just way t0o much mash. Size wise it’s better suited to a couple of people or if travelling alone for a couple of meals provided you keep the second half dry.
So what about the taste? This mash is sold as ‘cheesy mash’ but unlike other options on the market, the cheese taste is very muted. What you end up with is a good quality mash and not one that is going to upset anyone’s taste buds.
Like the rest of the Real Meal range, the bottom of the packet folds out to a flat base which makes it easy to stand the bag up while rehydrating. The suggested amount of water was 300 ml but it was very apparent from the start that this wasn’t going to be enough so after about 5 minutes I added another 25 ml of boiling water for a total of 325 ml to achieve a consistency that worked well after the full 10 minutes.
Calorie wise the entire meal packet (1 serve) is 469 calories so provided you can eat that much potato, it provides a good calorie hit. Protein wise this mash only contains 14.5 grams which is low compared to most meat based meals so I wouldn’t suggest trying to live on this meal alone 0n an extended hike. Salt wise it’s certainly not overpowering taste wise but is approaching the high level containing 377.5 mg per 100 grams of sodium.
Now for the negative and it’s a big one. The other meal ranges available on the Australian market see their mashed potato as a side dish rather than a main meal and are typically available for under $10.00 for a similar sized meal. In this case the Real Meals Cheesy Mash has an RRP of AUD $21.99 making it at the top end of the potato mash on the market. As such as good as this mash tastes, if choosing potato mash for my hiking adventures its unlikely to be this option unless I can find it at a good price.
